Tigers 21 v Durham 19

On Sunday 8th February, the Tiger Nation travelled north to meet our old friends, Durham.

Having missed them last season as we were in Division 1, it was nice to return to the Glebe centre for one last time, as it’s due for closure later this year and has always been a tricky venue for visiting sides to obtain points. Both teams were at full strength and the Tigers, after the first session, had lost on all four mats. The second session was slightly better with the triples and fours winning their respective games.

At lunch it was Durham 12, Tigers 4, with most of the aggregates close apart from the singles, Durham had a magnificent 29 shot different in their favour. During lunch the Tigers after winning several raffle prizes (was this all we were going to win?) had an inspirational team talk from their captain, to which, with no small amount of humour, the Durham captain replied.

So, the afternoon began… the Tigers won all four mats in the third session, stunning Durham who fought back in the fourth session to win two mats. However, with the Tigers also winning two mats, it was all down to the aggregates… the triples and fours both took the extra points, and on the singles, a remarkable turnaround for the Tigers had them gaining big scores on their last two games, meaning they reversed the 29 shot deficit to tie the aggregate.

The end result was Durham 19pts, and the Tigers 21pts, a great win which doesn’t happen often by an away team at Durham.

However, for me the winner was the 40 bowlers enjoying each other’s company and some great sportsmanship.

The Tigers, still remain unbeaten at seven games, can Derbyshire stop them next week? Stay tuned.
Captain Chris.

West Yorkshire B 29 v North Yorkshire Terriers 11

We had our penultimate away match against West Yorkshire B at the John Charles Stadium on Sunday.

It’s an impressive bowls stadium, but maybe a little controversially, we had a very short period of time to try out the mat on mat situation, so different to what we are used to. This short period of time definitely affected the triples and fours teams with more players waiting for a turn to practise. So, the day proved to be quite challenging with only the two pairs teams gaining a worthy six & eight points. Unfortunately, the singles, fours and triples only managed to achieve the other five points. This resulted in a disappointing total of 11 points with no aggregate points to add.

As always we had a warm welcome and very nice coffee!

The final result was West Yorkshire B 29 points including 8 aggregate points, North Yorkshire Terriers 11 points.

Tornados 32 v Humberside Hawks 8

“It’s a Family Affair” The NY Tornados (Sly and the Family Stone c.1971) continues!

A few numbers to begin with:- Ninth game of the season, seven wins, two losses.

Yesterday the NY Tornados held the return fixture with Humberside Hawks.
Scores were:- For 24 points and 8 points aggregate, 215 shots – Against 8 points, 0 aggregate and 139 shots.

8 points for the singles, 8 points for the pairs with the newly crowned NE singles champion, 6 for the trips and yet another clean sweep for the fours, all 10 points. Hopefully some momentum building in the 4s. Please note in our fours make up we have Two nippers average age of 14. That’s something to be very proud of for today and fingers crossed for our future.
At this juncture, amongst others, a big ‘shout out’ to their accompanying parents for their continuing loyal support that shows they have confidence in in how we manage their progress, wellbeing and safeguarding, something that often just flies under the radar.

Apart from the match scores, which in themselves were a fabulous effort, a couple of other wee facts to chew on.
On the trips rink, and on “Clarky’s” birthday they recorded a ‘6’! WOW! And… not to be outdone, the “Nippers” crew into the last end, last wood, 3 – 7 down, a quiet word in Josephs ears from the very quiet but totally focussed Raff says ‘hey, there’s a channel there’.

Booobbadaboom! They made a ‘Hot Shot 8’!! What a roar went up from the Tornados ranks…it must have been a sugar rush from all the birthday cakes that we had at lunch as we celebrated four birthdays within three days. Clarky, David Brown, Wee Rory ‘The Future’ Newsome and the ever improving Pauline.

Last but not least, I had a very busy day….. I had the great honour to present David (the unflappable) Newsome and local boy David Hunton with their superbly well-earned 100 caps for North Yorkshire county bowls trophy. David Hunton started his county career back in 2016, whilst David Newsome began his in 2007 and, continuing the ‘Family Affair’ theme, becomes the third Newsome (after Joe & Jill) to hit ‘The 100’

And a very, very, last shout out to Anna Naughton, adjudicating at our match, who has recently gained County Umpire status. WTS!
