TIGERS (Fixture 3) TORNADOS (Fixture 4) TERRIERS (Fixture 5) & Dianne’s 100th

Tigers Fixture 3
Tigers 20 v Derbyshire 20

On Sunday 16th November, the Tigers played their first home game against Derbyshire, having already played two away games winning both.

Derbyshire proved to be a tough nut to crack ,the Tigers only won one game in the singles, managed two wins in the pairs, winning the aggregate in that format. The triples however were dominant, winning all four games by big scores which meant they won the aggregate as well.

The fours had a tough day, new players were introduced, and the captain had to reshuffle the team due to late unavailability of two players. But the fours did manage a win, ending the day in a draw, with 20 points for each team.
It was a good enjoyable days bowling against Derbyshire, played in good spirit.

The Tigers head into their next game still undefeated.

Tornadoes Fixture 4
Staffordshire 30 v Tornados 10

If you have never visited the aptly named “Baddeley” Green WMC in Leek, the trips and singles mats are a bit like Knaresborough’s mat 3, times ten. For a “lefty” it’s a pure challenge.

Before heading off, thinking 10 – 12 points would be a very good days work, four players were again unavailable through studies and conflicting social engagements.

As we travelled up hill and down dale around full reservoirs and scenic viaducts, news started to arrive that players were at a dead stop on the motorway due to a very serious accident, requiring the Air Ambulance landing on the tarmac itself. Their ETA 11.00, start time 11.00, meaning four players had no roll up time at all, but they had arrived safely and in one piece!
And so, the day unfurled, the elegant and constant David Newsome gained two wins. But sadly, his counterpart could not repeat his success. Although going down 46 – 10 over the two sets, he received continuous and vociferous support from the side-lines until the last wood went down.

The triple that got caught in traffic delay and missed their roll up, were at a very big handicap. All the mats at Staffs are full of quirks and anomalies. Therefore, the match scores edged away from them early on, until they got the lie of the green.
The two “Dames” did their utmost to help to keep their skip in touching distance. After a four hour drive plus, they still managed to put in a heroic effort. Any other day, on better mats this trip would have fared a lot better. Mathew was as usual “playing out of his skin” in an effort to get a very much deserved win. Both rinks going down to the last end for a decider, but it was not to be, and they succumbed 8 – 10 in both. What an effort…..

The duo of David Brown & Steve Duffin continued their regained composure from the West Yorkshire match a week previous taking two wins against formidable opposition. Connor, Jill and “Jono” appear to be forming a solid relationship and narrowly missed out on two wins.

Final scores, 22 points, 8 aggregate v 10 points, 0 aggregate. 223 shots to 136. A great team effort all-round. Next up for the Tornados is Humberside A and getting back to winning ways.

Terriers Fixture 5
Stockport B 25 v Terriers 15

This last Sunday we played Stockport B in their superb Etherow indoor bowling centre at Broadbottom Greater Manchester. It was a hard fought match against some excellent team bowlers. Only our Singles and Pairs teams managed to match Stockport by halving the scores, but our other teams did score some points in their games. Having shared the aggregate points, the final scores ended 25 points to Stockport B and 15 points to North Yorkshire Terriers. Despite losing the match we were welcomed warmly by Stockport and the games were played in great spirit.

At the beginning of the match Dianne Ellis received an award from our team captain Pat Jones having played 100 games for our county team. Congratulations Dianne.
