NATIONAL FINALS – Mixed Fours & Over55 Pairs
Melton & District IBC
Saturday March 8: MIXED FOURS (2 entries)
The scoresheets published on their website by the ESMBA were confusing and difficult to interpret. It seems as if several teams had dropped out leaving some groups with only 2 teams. However Jill Newsome was able to confirm (by email) that both our teams of Steve & Lilly Duffin, Pauline Dickinson, James Clark and Joseph & Jill Newsome, Anna Naughton, Rafferty Patrick only won 1 of their 3 games in the round robin and so ended in 3rd place meaning neither team progressed to the knockout stage. Maybe tomorrow?
Sunday March 9th: Over55 PAIRS (2 entries)
Due to a dropout, Jill Newsome and Anna Naughton were offered a wild card entry which they gratefully accepted,
Robert Mumford & Pat Jones won their first game but this was followed by 2 defeats ruling them out of any further participation.
Lawrence & Chantel Ireland and Jill and Anna both had 2 wins in the round robin stage and this was enough to give them a chance of further progression in the knockouts. In the last 32 the Irelands had a narrow 8-7 win over Hampshire’s top Pair but then they crashed out 2-12 to West Mids2 in the last 16.
Taking advantage of their unexpected wild card, Jill and Anna decisively overcame Devon2 by 10-0 followed by an 8-6 defeat of Surrey2 to reach the QFinals. Here, a 13-4 win against Kent3 took them to the SFinal where they finally met their match against Cornwall2 and their day came to an end by 6-15.
Like the Irelands last year, what a great day – perhaps next year will see a North Yorkshire team reach the Final.
