It is sad to have to report the passing of Fred Wood yesterday after a long battle with cancer. Many will remember Fred as a strong and forceful character who made major contributions to the game in the ’90s. He served the Association from its creation in 1991, initially as Vice Chairman and then Chairman between 1994 and 1999. He also captained the county team during the same period, clocking up a total of 59 games. He was also instrumental in setting up and running the Easingwold SMBC, the Kyle Valley league and the Vale of York Pairs league and he led his club teams to success in both of these for several years. After stepping back from county involvement at the turn of the millennium he (together with his wife Audrey) took on the running of the Wednesday afternoon sessions on behalf of the Galtres 55+ fitness program. As a qualified umpire with much experience at all levels he was well suited to this task and he introduced and taught many newcomers to the game.
There is no doubt that his contribution to the Association and the game in North Yorkshire in general has been substantial. His presence will be much missed and our sympathies go out to Audrey and his family and friends at this very difficult time.
