Easingwold SMBC – Open Triples

(Report courtesy of Keith Hughes 4/2/24)

The 27th annual Easingwold Open Triples took place on Saturday 3rd February in the Galtres Centre playing for the Jack Freeman Trophy and £105 in prize money. There were 38 teams taking part from all over North Yorkshire including 4 entries from Durham, 2 from West Yorkshire and 3 all the way from Norfolk. (This makes this competition the largest held in our county).

Each team played 5 games of 40 minutes duration in alternate sessions with 2 points awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. At the start of the last session 6 teams had won all of their previous games but the pressure took its toll on the teams of David Chadwick, Chris Prendergast and James Clark who all lost their last game. This left three teams who remained unbeaten throughout the day with a maximum 10 points. Based on overall shot differences, the first three places were awarded as follows:

Winners:          David Newsome, Joe Newsome, Jill Newsome      10 points + 60 shots
Runners Up:    Pat Lawry, Jim Dawson, Edrene Rumley                10 points + 43 shots
Third place:     Simon Holtby, Matthew Jackson, Debbie Taylor    10 points + 33 shots

After the presentation of the Trophy and prize money (1st-£60, 2nd-£30, 3rd-£15), the Club chairman, Freddie Alnutt, thanked everyone who set up the equipment late on Friday night and maintained the supply of refreshments throughout the day and also Joyce and Keith Hughes for organising and running the competition on the day. Finally, he thanked all present for supporting the club through the raffle which raised nearly £300 for club funds.

The competition was played in a very friendly atmosphere throughout and it was good to see a number of new bowlers taking part. With an age range from the over 80’s to teenagers taking part as well as a wheelchair bowler it showed that Short Mat Bowls really is a game for all ages and abilities.

The club now looks forward to welcoming everyone back to compete again in 2025.
