CHAMPIONSHIPS – Pairs (report) and Triples results
Saturday November 27th: The 24 Pairs entries started playing at 9.00am in 6 groups of 4 and all were anticipating a full day of bowling. However, at 10.30am, halfway through the 3rd round robin session, the hall was plunged into darkness as Storm Arwen caused havoc to the power supply in many areas of the NE. The emergency (battery powered) lights were not bright enough to carry on so all play came to a standstill. Optimistically, everyone hoped that it would not be long before power was restored and everyone patiently sat around in the gradually cooling hall. However, at 1.30pm the Competition Organiser, Robert and Chairman Joseph both agreed that the play should be abandoned. (The power was not resumed until 6pm)
NOTE that the competition will be resumed on Saturday FEBRUARY 5th at the later starting time of 09.30am with an expected finish around 4.00pm.
Sunday November 28th: With Storm Arwen heading off into the North sea, the day was calmer although overnight snow meant that 1 of the 24 Triples entries had to withdraw. There were also 2 substitutions made for players who were self-isolating. Play therefore commenced in 6 groups (1×3 + 5×4) with the group winners and the next best 10 going through to the first KO round (the last 16). The winners then played in the QFinals in which there were wins for…
Freddie Alnutt, Norman Clarkson and Hilary Clark v Stuart & Sue Parton and Pat Jones (8-3)
Brian Thorne, Dave Hunton and David Brown v Neil Flynn, Steve Duffin and Jane Rudd (10-5)
David & Joseph Newsome and Danielle Smith v Steve Finch, Janet Clark and Christine Thorne (15-3)
Les Lambert, Matthew Jackson and Paul Whitcombe v Danny Langdon, James Clark and Geoff Whitehead (8-4)
In the Semis, Freddie and Co. were overwhelmed by the Newsomes team (0-18) whilst Les’s triple saw off the challenge from Brian’s three. (8-5)
The Final match was a very tightly fought and came down to the final end in which 2 shots for Les, Matthew and Paul gave them victory by a single shot (10-9).
All games were 8 ends. The umpire for the day was Eva Dayes and the day ended at 5.45pm – over an hour behind schedule.
