CHAMPIONSHIPS – O55 Pairs and U18 Singles results
Saturday November 18th
Since it was introduced in 2018, the Over 55 Pairs has proved (along with the Singles) our most popular Championship. This year the entry of 36 Pairs matched last years figure and again nearly half had opted into the National qualifiers. The round robin stage (9 groups of 4) was played over 6 sessions of 9 ends per game using 9 mats. This finally resulted in 20 pairs being given their marching orders with the remainder progressing to the first knockout round – the Last 16, which further eliminated another 8. In the Quarter-Finals the results were……
Lawrence/Chantal Ireland beat Pat Lawry/Jim Dawson 11-6
Pete Arthur/Jean Bridges overcame Arthur Jackson/Sue Pittham after an extra end 6-5
Pete Sayer/Ken Taylor put paid to Alan/Pat Banthorpe 12-3
Keith Hughes/David Brown dispatched Roger/Diane Ellis 16-3
The Semi-Finals saw the demise of Pete & Jean (5-7) and also Keith/David (4-8) and in the resulting Final it was Lawrence & Chantal who triumphed convincingly over Peter & Ken (9-1)
Alongside the oldies, at the other end of the hall 4 of our Juniors (all either 12 or 13 years old) battled it out for the U18 Singles title (our oldest County Championship). With such a small entry the outcome was determined on a simple round robin in which they all had a single game against the other three. With 3 wins (+19 shots) it was finally Toby Trevaskiss who claimed the title with last years champion Lily Duffin in second place with 2 wins (+11 shots). Toby also won the subsidiary target competition with Lewis Weightman in second place. Along with Rafferty Patrick, all four showed great potential for the future and Lily, Toby and Rafferty have already been selected for games with the Tornados county squad.
Thanks go to Alan Debenham (Humberside) and Tim Pearson (W Yorkshire) for umpring and to Pat Jones whose raffle raised a magnificent £134.50 (net).
