CHAMPIONSHIPS – Mixed Fours results
The first of this year’s Championships (the first for 2 years due to the enforced cancellation of last season) was held on November 6th (Umpire – Timothy Pearson). The 13 entries were slightly down from 2019-20 and a last minute dropout meant that the 12 remaining teams played their round robin games in 3 groups of 4. All game were 7 ends. The group winners and the Next Best 4 then contested the Q Finals with winners going into the S Finals.
In these, Neil Flynn, Malcolm Tingle, Jayne Rudd and Joanne Senior were knocked out by Jill, Joseph & David Newsome and Danielle Smith (12-5), whilst Matthew Jackson, Brenda Benson and Les & Margaret Lambert put an end to the hopes of Bob Lilly, Allan Meek, Eileen Duncalf and Hilary Clark (13-3).
The Final was close (as all Finals should be) but by the 7th end, Matthew and Co. needed a 2 to force an extra end. A tight head resulted in a call to Tim who adjudged that they had not quite made it and therefore the Newsome team were declared this years Champions by 6-5.
This was the 14th running of this particular discipline and at least 2 of the Newsome family have now featured in the winning line-up on 7 occasions – an impressive record.
