CHAMPIONSHIPS – Mixed Fours and O55 Pairs results

These were the last 2 of this years County Championship held at the end of the season due to the need to complete ESMBA National qualifiers by their deadline date.

Saturday March 22ndThe Over 55 PAIRS: There were 31 entrants with 2 late dropouts. The remainder played their round robin rounds in 7 groups (6×4 and 1×5) with the group winners and “next best” 9 going on to play in the first KO round – the last 16. These eliminated another 8 leaving the cream of the crop to contest the Q Finals the results of which were as follows.

Pete Sayer and Ken Taylor
v Robert Mumford and Jean Jones 16-6
Michael & Julia Anderton v Lawrence & Chantal Ireland 11-6

In the S Finals Pat/Jim then knocked out the Andertons by 14-8 whilst Pete/Ken succumbed to the Wakefields by 6-8.
A closely fought Final ensued with Shirley and Tom finally losing out to Pat and Jim by a single shot 8-9.

   

Sunday March 23rdThe Mixed Fours: 12 teams participated – the same as last year. After the round robins, which were played in 3 groups of 4 the group winners and “next best” 5 took part in the QFinals with the following results.

Arthur Jackson, Dennis Jarvis, Debbie Taylor and Sue Lilley v Matthew Jackson, Les Lambert, Brenda Benson and Caroline Harris 8-6
James Clark, Pat Lawry and Jill & Joseph Newsome
v Alan & Pat Banthorpe and Neil & Heather Robertson 8-4
John Moss, Gill Fletcher, Faith Bishop and Jez Williams
v Robert Mumford, Pat Jones, Shirley & Tom Wakefield 6-4
Lawrence & Chantal Ireland, Chris Prendergast and Gill Alnutt
v Brian Parrish, Carole Law and Brian & Christine Thorne 17-0

In the SFinals, Lawrence’s four, after their decisive QF victory, ran out of steam and went down 3-10 to Arthur and Co. whilst James’ team were in fine form against the Hambleton four sending them packing by 18-2.
In the Final match of the day, James, Pat and the two Newsome’s pushed Arthur and Co into 2nd place by 14-4.

   

Since this Mixed Fours competition started in 2008, the Newsome’s in varying combinations (and with different “guests”) have now been champions on 10 occasions, a remarkable record.
