Northern Championships – Barnard Castle
The 28th running of the Northern England Championships proved to be one of our better years with 15 of our 20 teams making it through the round robin stages to the final 16 and with 9 of these then reaching the Quarter Finals.
In the Fours, Rose Haynes, Les Lambert, Paul Whitcombe and Matthew Jackson then ended the hopes of Alan Banthorpe’s four by 8-3. After winning their SF against West Yorkshire they had a disastrous start in the Final against Bill Burns Stockport rink dropping a 6 on the first end from which they could not recover, eventually losing 2-14.
In the Singles, our star Junior, Daniel Agar, had good win over West Yorkshire’s Steve Packer before falling to Staffordshire’s Adam Lamb (the eventual winner) by a single shot 9-10. Francis Boatman however, followed his 3 round robin wins with 3 more wins, including a 9-8 defeat of Englands Peter Roberts to reach the Final. Here he also lost out to Adam (who seemed unable to miss any shot he went for) eventually losing 2-9.
In the Pairs, Matthew Jackson and Les Lambert, having won all 3 round robin games had a tight match against Danny Langdon and James Clark finally winning 8-7 only to lose their QF game against Jane Rudd and Jill Newsome by 7-9. Jane and Jill then had a great SF win over Humberside’s duo of Dave Coultas and Steve Danby by 10-9 after needing a 3 on their final end. Their run then finally came to an end in the Final against Stockport which they lost 2-8.
The only flat spot in our performance was in the Triples where none of out 5 triples made it beyond the last 16.
The collective efforts of all those reaching the QFinals and beyond meant we came second overall in the County Shield for which we were awarded the Alice Hollas trophy to look after for the next year.
