NATIONALS – Singles and Pairs

Melton Mowbray IBC – April 11/12

SINGLES – Both our entrants qualified for the final 32, David Newsome with 2 wins and Francis Boatman with 3 wins in the round robin. They then both had 1 shot wins in their first KO game to reach the last 16 in which David went down to Peter Winter (E Sussex) whilst Francis beat Simon Smith (Humberside) to reach the Q Finals. Francis then “avenged” David with a convincing 12-2 defeat of Peter Winter to set up a SF game against Benny Bass (Devon). On the last end, Francis was lying 3 for the match but Benny’s final running wood destroyed his hopes of a place in the Final and he went out 5-9 after a great days bowling.

PAIRS – David Newsome/Roger Green started their day well with an opening 13-5 win but failed to progress after 2 further defeats. Disappointing, as 1 more shot in their final game would have meant a draw and progression based on shot difference. Both our other two Pairs however won all their round rin games to top their groups and reach the final 32. Bronagh Toleman/Danny Langdon then defeat the top Northants pairing of Fred Pearson/Ed Sawbridge before crashing out 1-10 in the next round to Dorset’s Alex Kley/Tom Perris. Meanwhile, Lee Toleman/Lawrence Moffat squeezed through their first game with a 9-8 win, before going on to defeat (Essex1) Barry Hedges/Peter Fautley 8-3 and (Devon1) James Trott/Michael Ivings 8-6. Their SF match was then lost 5-11 against the eventual Champions from Paul Clegg and Matty Worden (Cheshire).
