THE NORTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS – How we got on.

The Northern Championships

Now in its fourth year at York, the 2026 Northern’s were held over the weekend of the 31st of January and the 1st of February, and as usual comprised of thirty-two teams in each discipline from across the seven NE counties, with a total of thirty-five players from North Yorkshire competing in all four disciplines.

Saturday saw the Singles & Fours playing their tournaments, with two good results for NY.
In the Singles we had:-
Daniel Agar, Steve Duffin, David Herbert, Arthur Jackson and David Newsome.
Arthur David & Daniel made it out of the group stage, with David and Daniel going into the semi-finals. Daniel then went on to win his final.

The Fours were made up from:-
Freddie Alnutt, Chris Prenderghast, Judith Fearns & Gill Alnutt,
David Herbert, Barry Jones, Jo Jones & Anne Herbert,
David Hunton, Pat Lawry, Debbie Taylor & David Brown,
Robert Mumford, Mark Dobson, Pat Jones & Jean Jones,
Joseph Newsome, James Clark, Connor Walton & Jill Newsome, and
Peter Sayer, Richard Lochman, Tony Tennyson & Ian Helliwell.

From our six entries, the David Brown, Jean Jones and Joe Newsome teams cleared the group stage. Joe’s team making it to the final.
When it came to the presentations for the Fours, Daniel was again in the medals. Substituting for Jill Newsome with team mates, Joe, Connor, and James.

Sunday alas, was a dry day for North Yorkshire, with the Pairs and Triples teams unable to get into the trophies.
The Pairs comprised of:-
John Catley & Terry Greenwood,
Roger Green & Paul Johnson,
David Newsome & Jill Newsome, and
Tony Tennyson & Ian Helliwell.
Only John and Terry failed to progress beyond the group stage, with all three of the teams that did, losing in the last sixteen round.

While the Triples were made up from:-
Daniel Agar, James Clark & Steve Duffin,
David Hunton, Debbie Taylor & David Brown,
Pat Lawry, Tom & Shirley Wakefield,
David, Joseph & Jill Newsome, and
Peter Sayer, Richard Lochman & Tony Tennyson.
Out of the five NY teams Steve and Debbie’s team failed to get beyond the group stage,
with Joe’s team managing a win in the last sixteen, but losing in the quarter-finals.

The County Shield was won by Stockport, and the Allice Hollis Trophy was won by West Yorkshire.
