CHAMPIONSHIPS – FOURS & PAIRS RESULTS
Fours 22/11/25
The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of November saw the start of our county championships for this season, the Fours being played on the Saturday and the Pairs on the Sunday.
With the same number of entries as last year (thirteen) the Fours were played in three groups (2 × 4 and 1 × 5). This resulted in the group winners and “next best” five going straight into the Quarter-Finals, the results of which were as follows:-
Robert Mumford, Mark Dobson, Pat Jones, Jean Jones. (7)
v
David Herbert, Barry Jones, Jo Jones, Anne Herbert. (9)
David Hunton, Pat Lawry, Debbie Taylor, David Brown. (6)
v
Joseph Newsome, James Clark, Connor Walton, Jill Newsome. (8)
Peter Sayer, Richard Lochman, Tony Tennyson, Ian Helliwell. (7)
v
Steve Duffin, Pauline Dickinson, Daniel Agar, Lilly Duffin. (5)
Brian Halliday, John Drew, Faith Bishop, Linda Halliday. (1)
v
Freddie Alnutt, Chris Prenderghast, Judith Ferns, Gill Alnutt. (10)
In the Semi’s, Joseph’s Four beat Freddie’s Four (9-3) and Peter’s Four beat David’s team (15-3)
In the Final Peter, Richard, Tony & Ian, beat Joe, James, Connor & Jill, (11-2) to take the title.
All games were played over seven ends. The Umpires for the day were Alan Debenham, and Anna Naughton, who was making her County Championship umpiring debut.
This year we have four entries available in the Nationals, an increase of two over last year’s allocation, Last year’s Nationals had a separate qualifying competition which accounted for the low entrance numbers.
Pairs 23/11/25
This year’s entry was twenty-nine (one less than last year) played in seven groups (1×5 & 6×4). This meant the group winners and “next best” nine went into the Last 16 round. Following the elimination of another eight pairs, the Quarter-Finals produced the following results:-
Roger Green & Paul Johnson, v Tom & Shirley Wakefield (11 – 7)
Tony Tennyson & Ian Helliwell v Jonathan & Rod Dawson (9 – 8)
Tim Jackson & Dennis Jarvis v John Catley & Terry Greenwood (7 – 8)
Pat Lawry & Jim Dawson v David Newsome & Danny Langdon (4 – 7)
In the Semi’s David & Danny beat Tony & Ian (12 – 2) with John & Terry beating Roger & Paul (6 – 5)
In the Final David with Danny, improved on his last years runners up trophy, beating John & Terry (8 – 6) to become the 2026 Pairs Champions.
As with the Fours, this year we have an increase in entries for the national finals, up from four last year to nine this year. At this time we don’t yet know who our entries for both competitions will be, more information as we get it.
All the games were played over nine ends. The Umpires for the day were once more Humberside’s Alan Debenham and our own Anna Naughton.
The weekend was, as usual, smoothly organised and run by Competitions Secretary Robert Mumford. There were two raffles held over both the Fours and Pairs competitions organised by Pat Jones, which resulted in a total of £138 being raised for county funds. Thanks also go to the refreshments squad and those who set up the hall, etc, making the weekend the success that it was.
