CHAMPIONSHIPS – Singles results

Sat. 30/11/24

The SINGLES is the primary event in any Championships, the one which all aspiring bowlers really want to win. In the last 12 years there have only been 6 Champions, with Dave Newsome and Danny Langdon being triple winners, Ben Render and Bronagh Toleman winning twice each and Mathew Jackson and Peter Sayer have lifted the Cup once. It’s a pretty exclusive “club”.

The entry of 40 hopefuls this year was an increase of 4 over last year but still well below the record entry of 49 in 2018. The list of starters including 3 of the last 4 years holders of the title but would this year see a new challenger emerge?

The round robin consisted of 10 groups of 4 with the 10 group winners and the “next best” 6 going on to the knockouts (last 16). Here there were some very close games with 4 of the 8 draws won/lost by a single shot. The 8 winners, the “cream of the crop”, then fought it out in the Q Finals with the following results.

Steve Duffin vs Ken Taylor  12-3
Dave Newsome vs Pete Sayer 12-11
Matthew Jackson vs Tim Jackson 9-6
Rod Dawson vs James Clark 10-8

The Semi-Finals saw Dave secure a convincing win over Steve by 15-5 whilst Rodders lost out to Matthew Jackson by 6-9.

The Final was therefore between Dave, the winner in 2018, 2019 and 2020, and Matthew who had won in 2022 after beating guess who? Yes it was Dave who was aiming for his 4th consecutive win. However this time it was Matthew who triumphed by 8-6 to become this season’s County Singles Champion for the second time.

Thanks go to Tim Pearson for umpiring duties whilst Pat Jones was given the day off as there was no raffles.
