CHAMPIONSHIPS – Fours & Pairs results

Sat/Sun November 23rd/24th: 

On Saturday (Fours), heavy snow meant a late start as several had journey times affected by the conditions (including the Competition Secretary who had all the documentation etc!). There had been 13 entries (3 less than last year) but after a late dropout only 12 took part. The round robin was organized in 3 groups of 4 after which the bottom 4 were eliminated leaving the remainder to progress to the knockouts and play the Quarter Finals the results of which were as follows.

Matthew Jackson, Les Lambert, Allan Meek, Paul Whitcombe vs Lawrence & Chantal Ireland, Chris Prendergast, Judith Fearns 10-3
Joseph, Jill, Danielle Newsome and James Clark vs Robert Mumford, Pat Jones and Shirley & Tom Wakefield 7-6  
Roger & Diane Ellis, Andy Eccles and Sam Stacey vs Roger Green, Paul Johnson, Debbie Taylor and John Goddard 12-3
David Newsome, Daniel Agar, Steve & Lilly Duffin vs Arthur Jackson, Mike Carter, Dennis Jarvis and Sue Pittham 9-5 

In the Semi Finals, Joseph & Co comfortably ousted Rogers Four 12-1 whilst David’s team overcame Matthew’s 10-2

The Final between the Newsome boys was their second meeting of the day. In the round robin the result had gone to Joseph by 8-2, but David was still unable to overcome his big brother who took the title by 7-4.

    

On Sunday it was the turn of the Pairs for which there had been an increased entry of 30 (up 2 on last year) although 2 dropouts meant that only 28 took part. This meant a round robin in 7 groups of 4 with the top 16 going into the knockouts, after which the last 8 then contested the Quarter Finals with the following results.

David and Danielle Newsome vs Pat Lawry and Jim Dawson 8-6
Rod and Jonathan Dawson vs  Robert Mumford and Jean Jones 11-4
Steve Duffin and Daniel Agar vs Dave and Anne Herbert 11-5
Joseph and Jill Newsome vs Chris Prendergast and Judith Fearns 8-6

The Semi Finals saw Steve/Daniel overcome the Dawsons 11-3 whilst Joseph/Jill were squeezed out by David/Danielle 6-5.

The Final was a close encounter between David/Danielle and Steve/Daniel with Mr and Mrs Newsome just losing out by 7-6 to Steve and Daniel 7-6 who thus became our 21st County Pairs Champions.

There are two points of note regarding this Final. David and Danielle are expecting their first child in March and did not let pregnancy get in the way of some good games of bowls (I understand David’s Mum, Jill, had set the precedence for this). On the other team, Daniel, studying hard in his final year at uni, had not bowled a wood all season until Saturday when Steve had persuaded him to take time off from his studies. What a talent he is. (Steve’s not bad either, this being the 3rd time he has won the pairs Championship!)
