The “Battle of the Sexes” 2024

For the third year running, the short mat season kicked off in fine style in the Galtres Centre in Easingwold. The event attracted a record turnout from all the northern counties and 62 Ladies took on a team of 62 Gents meaning this was the largest competition ever organised in North Yorkshire.  The large turnout meant a change to last years format and play was organized over 8 sessions of 10 ends (or 45 minutes whichever came first) with everyone playing in 4 sessions of 2 wood Triples.  To round things off, the top 3 Ladies teams played a 3 end shoot against the top 3 gents teams with the following results.

Pat Lawry/Pat Jones/Joan Taylor v Alan Banthorpe/Brian Halliday/Alan Shelborne 2-1
Annabelle Almond/Lilly Duffin/Gail Allen v Ben Render/Ian Bratton/Julian Brunton 2-2
Kath Fussey/Sam Stacy/Linda Hickford v Matthew Jackson/Mitch Moody/Neil Robertson 3-5

This gave the Gents a narrrow 8-7 victory and concluded a great way to start this season, and for those who had spent the summer out in the fresh air, some much needed match practice ready for the competitive season ahead.

The day was organized and run jointly by North Yorkshire’s Safeguarding Officer, Jill Newsome, and Chairman Joseph Newsome in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance who will receive a donation of £500 from the days proceedings.
