National Finals – results

All Finals played at Melton Mowbray

April 7- SINGLES
David Newsome, Danny Langdon and Francis Boatman
Danny, with a 4-12 loss (against England manager Steve McAlister), a 10-9 win (against W Sussex’s Peter Whale) and a 9-9 draw (against Cheshire’s Lee Toleman) came 3rd in his group so failed to progress. Francis only had 2 games (due to a drop-out) and a 9-6 win (over Cornwall’s Peter Hoare) was followed by a 4-14 defeat (against Norfolk’s Gary Best) which was only good enough for 3rd place so like Danny it was an early bath. David likewise only had 2 RR games which he won (13-6, 11-5) but then unfortunately went down 10-11 in the last 32.

Apr 8 – PAIRS:
Danny Langdon/Francis Boatman and James Clark/Danielle Smith.
3 defeats (7-7, 5-8, 3-16) in the RR left James and Danielle with nowhere to go but to watch Danny and Francis who went through with 3 straight wins (8-6, 13-3, 11-3).   A 12-8 win then took them into the last 16 but here they dibbed out by a single shot (8-9) to that man again – Steve McAlister and Ed Sawbridge.

Apr 9 – FOURS:
Joseph & Jill Newsome, Daniel Agar and James Clark
Francis Boatman, Danny Langdon, Dave Hunton and David Brown
David Newsome, Steve Duffin, Jane Rudd and Neil Flynn
Roger & Diane Ellis, Sam Stacey and Janet Clark
Roger’s Four started well with a good 11-2 win but then two losses (2-15, 3-9) sank their chances of going further. Danny’s team likewise kicked off with a 17-2 victory but then went down by 5 shots in their next game. A win in their last may have sent them onwards but they could only manage a draw (10-10) so had to be content with an early trip home. With 2 wins (8-5 and 11-1) and a loss (1-3) Joseph’s four reached the final 32 where they were defeated (by a strong Northants team which included Steve McAlistair (yet again). David’s team went one step further and after a 7-5 win, reached the last 16 only to end their day with an 8-12 defeat.

Apr 10 – TRIPLES
David & Joseph Newsome and Danielle Smith
Danny Langdon, James Clark, Geoff Whitehead
Steve Duffin, Neil Flynn, Jane Rudd
A great start all round with all 3 teams getting through to the knockouts. David with a plus score of 29 (9-5, 18-5 and 15-3); Steve with a plus score of 17 (11-7, 11-5 and 12-5) and Danny with 8-8 draw, a 6-7 loss and a win (score unknown). However the challenge for all three then came to an and, Dave by 6-19, Steve by 4-9 and Danny by 2-11.

To sum up the weekend, Jill Newsome emailed to say……..

You will be able to see how everyone faired from the website and the lack of anyone interesting to watch on Facebook live streaming of the finals.
I would like to add that MANY of the defeats were very hard fought matches, many going to extra ends. Despite a lack of silverware, I would go so far as to say that in my memory, this was the best showing from North Yorkshire at the National finals.
There were no runaway defeats and everyone who got through to the knockout stages did so with excellent results. It was a pleasure to be part of the team, most of whom spent all four days there supporting each other.
No disgrace”
