National Finals – Mixed Fours & Over55 Pairs
Saturday March 5:
MIXED FOURS : This year the normal entry of 64 finalists was reduced to 48 (presumably for Covid19 reasons). 3 further teams did not turn up on the day. Our 2 teams of qualifiers were the Newsomes with Danielle Smith and Malcolm Tingle, Neil Flynn, Jayne Rudd and Joanne Senior. The latter foursome started with an 5-8 loss but then a 9-9 draw and an 8-0 win (credited to them due to a no show) saw them end with 3 points and a shot diff of 5 – not quite good enough to send them into the knockouts. After reaching the Final in 2020, the Newsome’s team were full of hope and expectations but after losing all 3 of their games (5-9, 6-7. 6-8) these were dashed and they too, had to settle for an early bath.
Sunday March 6:
OVER 55 PAIRS : Only 3 teams had to withdraw leaving 61 finalists. Our 2 teams of qualifiers were Robert Mumford/Pat Beardsley and Rod Dawson/Roger Green. However, unfortunately Rod and Roger were unable to attend, having both tested positive for Covid earlier in the week. Robert and Pat were at their second consecutive finals. They lost their first 2 round robin games, 3-12 and 6-12 but finished their day with a 9-5 win over Surrey2.
