14th PAIRS TOURNAMENT 2012

Saturday 20th October 2012

This year, 7 of the leagues 11 clubs were able to enter (4 of them with 2 teams) and another team (Patchwork) was made up with a mixture of players from the other 4 clubs. The same format as before was used (12 x 35 minute playing sessions spread over 8 mats) giving each team 4 matches during the course of the day. The normal league format was used so each match was worth 12 points (2 per mat + 4 for the aggregate) - a possible maximum over the day of 48.

Knaresborough 'A' (Beardsley's, Jones's, Harris's and Weatherill's) had a good day with 3 match wins taking 12 points off Patchwork, and 10 each off Easingwold 'B' and Boroughbridge 'B', but their last match, against Boroughbridge 'A', let them down. In this they only managed 5 points to leave themselves in 2nd place on 37 points.

However, Hambleton 'A' (Banthorpe x 3, Adams's, Simmonite, Mellors and Flynn) won all their matches taking 12 points each off Knaresborough 'B' and Yoredale, 10 points off Easingwold 'B' and 8 points off Patchwork. This left them as this years convincing winners on 42 points, 5 clear of Knaresborough 'A' and 10 ahead of the 3 teams in 3rd place.

Although of course bowls is a team game, it is worth giving individual credit to the 5 pairs who remained undefeated over their 4 matches. With 4 wins were Alan & Pat Banthorpe (Hambleton 'A'); Robert & Lesley Harris (Knaresborough 'A');  Gordon Cripps & Arthur Jackson (St. Cuthberts). With 3 wins and a draw were Derek Johnson & Bruce Dobson (Easingwold) and Jim & Jean Weatherill (Knaresborough)

George McDowell from Kirkbymoorside SMBC, (who had been asked to take on the duties of the leagues table compiler for this season) was also asked to organise the running of the day - a job normally handled in the past by the League Secretary. There were no umpires appointed for the day.
