21st Challenge Cup Day

Saturday February 28th 2015

Only 6 of the leagues 13 clubs entered full teams this year, three with 2 teams and one with 3 teams. To make up the numbers to the required entry of 12, Ian Battersby (league Secretary) had agreed for a composite team of Raskelf/Stillington to enter. Last year's format was followed exactly with all teams being placed into 2 groups of 6 giving every team a total of 5 matches (timed at 35 minutes). The scoring system was in the usual league format so that 6 points were available for each match making 30 points available for any team who managed to get through the day without a defeat.

Group 1 was dominated by last years winners Great Ouseburn1 and Knaresborough. However, in the critical match between these two, it was Knaresborough who came out on top winning on both mats and finishing with a total of 27 points and leaving Great Ouseburn1 disappointed not to be in with a chance of holding on to the Cup for a fifth successive year.

In Group 2  competition was much closer and it was eventually Great Ouseburn2 who ended on 19 points, just 1 point ahead of both Hambleton2 and St. Cuthberts.

The Final match therefore saw Great Ouseburn2 up against  Knareborough. This was a good close match with Knaresborough dominating on one mat and Knareborough on the other. After 5 ends Ouseburn were ahead by just 1 shot (10-9) but then Lesley & Robert Harris and Pam Carass finished strongly with a 4, 2, 2 to win their game against Les & Margaret Lambert and Joan Ramsden by 15-3.  Meanwhile, although Thelma Price, Roger Green and John Price had an 8 shot lead over Derek & Pat Beardsley and Pat Jones, they were not able to find any more shots and their 10-4 win was not enough to make up the deficit.

The Great Ouseburn club thus wave goodbye to the cup they have won in each of the last 4 years and Knaresborough were well pleased to have broken this run and to get their clubs name on the cup for the very first time.
