KO CUP FINAL

Thursday April 4th at Boroughbridge Memorial Hall : In an exciting end to this year's Knockout Cup, a good crowd of onlookers and supporters for both sides saw favourites Great Ouseburn falter at the hands of Hambleton 'B'. As the match progressed it looked very much as if Great Ouseburn were on course to repeat the triple sweep of all three titles - League, Challenge Cup and KO Cup, that they had achieved 2 seasons ago. In fact, after 10 ends they were comfortably ahead by 10 shots with Rose Haynes, Simon & Megan Holtby 12 - 2 up against Alan & Pat Banthorpe and Barry Simmonite on one mat whilst Roger Green, Paul Williamson and Doug Child were level with  Jim and Pat Adams and Neil Flynn at 5-5 on the other.

But how quickly can things change in this fascinating game of bowls. Hambleton kept focussed in the sure knowledge that no one and no team are unbeatable. Three ends later the gap had reduced to just 5 shots after Alan took a 4 off Rose and Jim had taken a 3 off Roger. On the last end Alan's trio took a single to end just 6 shots behind whilst Roger's team also took a single to save the match by ending 6 shots behind Jim's team.

On the extra end, Alan won the toss and, as would be expected, elected to 'bat' last. However he ended one shot down. With only the skips left to bowl on the other mat, Roger drew in to take the shot but Jim bowled a better wood to take it back again. Roger failed with his last wood  so maybe a second extra end was going to be required. But no...... Jim kept cool and finished off with another superb draw to claim the Cup by a single shot for Hambleton for the first time in 14 years.

If only all matches were as exciting! (See PhotoGallery)

19th CHALLENGE CUP DAY

Saturday February 23rd 2013

Only 9 of the leagues 13 clubs entered a team this year so Ian Battersby (league Secretary) had invited Easingwold and Hambleton to enter two teams each and with another composite team (Raskelf/Boroughbridge) the ideal number of 12 teams took part. Last years format was followed exactly with all teams being placed into two groups of 6 giving every team a total of 5 matches (timed at 35 minutes). After last years departure, the scoring system reverted to the usual league format so that 6 points were available for each match (2 per mat + 2 for aggregate shots). There were therefore 30 points available for any team who managed to get through the day without a defeat.

Group 1 was dominated by Great Ouseburn who won all their games except one and ended 8 points clear of Easingwold 2 to claim their place in the Final for the 3rd year running.

In Group 2  it was Hambleton 1 who ended in pole position having  won all but two of their games to finish 6 points clear of Tollerton.

The Final match therefore saw last years winners, Great Ouseburn up against  Hambleton who have been past winners a total of 4 times. Ouseburn's triple of Rose Haynes, Simon Holtby and 14 year old Megan Holtby had a very comfortable win over Eil Beardmore, Arthur Moreley and  Lucy Hubbard finishing 11 shots up (12- 1).  Great Ouseburn's other triple of Roger Green, Paul Williamson and Doug Child had a tighter game against Alan Banthorpe, Pat Banthorpe and Barry Simmonite but a 5 on the second end helped them to a 6 shot win  by 11-5.

Great Ouseburn thus retain the Cup for the 3rd successive year - a feat never before achieved. They now equal the runners up, Hambleton and also Tollerton having won the Cup a total of 4 times each so next year (2013/14) this record will be one that Great Ouseburn will be aiming to try and break.
