16th CHALLENGE CUP DAY

Saturday February 27th 2010

With only 9 of the leagues 14 clubs entering a team this year, the organisers invited Easingwold, Boroughbridge and Knaresborough to enter two teams to make up the ideal number of 12 teams. This enabled Ian Battersby, the League Secretary, who was organising the event for the first time, to repeat last years format exactly. Hence all teams were placed into two groups of 6 giving everyone a total of 5 matches (timed at 35 minutes). Normal league scoring applied so there were 30 points possible for any team who managed to get through the day without a defeat.

In Group 1, Knaresborough 1 with 19 points were clear winners ahead of both Easingwold 2 and Helmsley who both ended with 16. In Group 2, all depended on the last match between Hambleton (winners in 4 of the last 5 years) and St. Cuthberts who were only separated by a single point. In a tight game it just swung St. Cuthberts way who pinched the aggregate by a single shot to end on 22 points, just clear of Hambleton who ended on 21.

In the Final, the winners of each group met for a final showdown.  Knaresborough (Derek & Pat Beardsley and Jean Wetherill) dropped a 5 on the first end but recovered to 7-7 then dropped a single on the next two ends. When the whistle sounded for the end of time, they had managed to score a 1 but it was St. Cuthberts (Daphne Thompson, Harry Welch and Ken Thompson) who claimed the 2 points for a 9-8 win. Meanwhile, on the other mat, St Cuthberts (Arthur Jackson, Gordon Cripps and Ann Thompson) had gone into a 9-4 lead but then Knaresborough (Bryan & Pat Jones and Jo Hearld) hit back with a 4 and a 3 to go into the last end 2 shots ahead. When the whistle blew St. Cuthbert were holding 1 shot (for a drawn match) but had the last wood still to bowl. This was superbly delivered by Ann who eased out Knaresborough's 2nd wood to lie 2 shots and tie the game 11-11, thereby giving the Challenge Cup to St. Cuthberts for the very first time by an overall team score of 20-19.
