14th CHALLENGE CUP DAY

Saturday March 1st 2008

11 of the leagues 15 clubs entered a full team of two triples. The organisers had also allowed an additional composite entry from Tollerton/Great Ouseburn (neither of which could field a full team) to make up a 12th team to ensure that all entries received an equal number of games. Last years format was repeated with all clubs placed into two Groups playing all others in their Group over timed 35 minute games (triple A playing the opposing triple A and triple B likewise playing the opposing triple B ). Thus each club consequently had 5 matches with a possible maximum score of 30 points.

In Group 1, Easingwold and Yoredale only lost one of their matches and both ended the Group play with 22 points. However it was Yoredale who went into the Final with an overall shot difference of +53, even though they had lost their Group game against Easingwold (last years winners), who ended with a shot difference of +13. In Group 2 the outright winners were Hambleton who never lost a match and ended on 26 points.

The Final match between these two Group winners (Hambleton vs Yoredale) was a very evenly matched affair with never more than a few shots in it overall. In fact with just 2 minutes left, Hambleton's Alan Banthorpe, Bryan Foster and Pat Banthorpe were 12-5 up against Brian Stoker, Joan Thompson and Brenda Stoker, whilst on the other mat, Yoredale's Billy Thompson, Tim & Pam Bowes were 12-5 up against Danny Brown, Derek Williams and Pat Bennett - even stevens. Was it pressure, was it skill or was it luck........but at this crucial point Billys triples dropped a FIVE which rather sealed Yoredale's fate and moments later, the whistle sounded. Hambleton thus became Kyle Valley Challenge Cup Champions for the 3rd time in the last 4 years by 23-19. (See PhotoGallery)
