Saturday 24th October 2009
This year, 11 of the leagues 14 clubs were able to enter a team or teams although Raskelf and Great Ouseburn entered a joint team under the name of Great Raskburn. There were 11x35 minute playing sessions spread over 8 mats and this gave each team 4 matches during the course of the day. The normal league format was used so each match was worth 12 points (2 per mat + 4 for the aggregate) and there was a theoretical maximum over the day of 48.
The first matches of the day set the scene with Great Raskburn, Knaresborough A, Hambleton A and Easingwold A all undefeated. Of the remaining 12 games in their final 3 matches, Great Raskburn lost 4, Knaresborough A lost 3 and Easingwold A lost only 2. However it was Hambleton A who finished the day completely undefeated with a maximum 48 points to take the Pairs Tournament Cup for only the second time in its 12 year history. This was a fine combined team effort from the four Thirsk Pairs of Alan Banthorpe, Pat Banthorpe, Pat Adams, Jim Adams, Danny Brown, Margaret Mellors, Barry Simmonite and Lucy Hubbard who achieved what has never been achieved before in this competition - a completely clean sweep. Scores were tabulated by the league Secretary, Andrew Mather and the umpire for the day was Fred Wood.
