11 of the leagues 15 clubs entered a full team of two triples. The organisers had also allowed an additional composite entry to make up a 12th team to ensure that all entries received an equal number of games. This additional team, named the Nomads, contained players from clubs that had already entered their allowable one team, and it was therefore ruled that they would not be allowed to win the contest. Last years format was repeated with all clubs placed into two Groups playing all others in their Group over timed 35 minute games (triple A playing the opposing triple A and triple B likewise playing the opposing triple B ). Thus each club consequently had 5 matches with a possible maximum score of 30 points.
In Group 1, Easingwold recovered from an early 0-6 defeat at the hands of Great Ouseburn to win all their other 4 games and end on 23 points and win their group - the days best overall performance. In Group 2, Hambleton, the defending Cup holders, also had a shaky start, but recovered well and ended top of their group with 21 points.
The Final match therefore saw Hambleton trying to make it 3 in a row against Easingwold, who last won three years ago. Alan Banthorpe, David Paterson and Margaret Mellors kept Jim Almond, Elsie Thompson and Betty Almond at bay with a 11-6 win but Jenny Toase, Sally Roocroft and Cyril Croft did just enough to secure an overall 2 shot victory by beating Danny Brown, Derek Williams and Pat Bennett by 13-6. Easingwold therefore get their names on the Challenge Cup for their third time whilst the Tilley Shield goes to Hambleton. (The day was Umpired by Arthur Rathmell). See PhotoGallery. For a listing of all previous winners see the Kyle Valley League Roll of Honour.
