(Saturday December 3rd 2011)
Round 1 was a round robin composed of 9 groups of 4 so everyone was guaranteed a minimum of 3 games. The winner in each group plus the next best 7 then went on into the first KO round - the Last Sixteen which saw the departure of last years winner and runner up (Simon Holtby and Rose Haynes) to the eventual winners. Another faller at this stage was David Newsome/Ben Render who lost to Gareth/Jacinta Townend by a close measure after an extra end. The winners of these 8 matches then contested the Quarter-Finals all of which were won by comfortable margins as follows.....
Anne/Mick Ridge 15-3 against Alan Meek/Margaret Manfield
Simon/Cameron Breeze 11-4 against Neil Atkinson/Colin Stevens
Gareth/Jacinta Townend 12-5 against Derek/Pat Beardsley
Bronagh Malone/Sean Conroy 17-5 against Richard Lochman/Jo Newsome
In the Semi-Finals Gareth & Jacinta could not hold back Bronagh & Sean losing 6-9 whilst the experience of Mick & Anne was not enough to prevent Simon & Cameron from claiming a place in the Final by a convincing 13-4 win.
The Final was therefore between Simon and his 14 year old son Cameron from the new club at Church Fenton and the Crossgates Pair of Bronagh and Sean. This time it was experience that triumphed with the Irish Pair claiming this year Championship by 12-2 (Bronaghs' second Pairs title).
(The playoff for 3rd/4th place was won by Gareth & Jacinta Townend who beat Mick & Anne 11-7)
All games in Round 1 were of 9 ends duration and this was increased to 10 ends for the KO stages. The day ran according to schedule and finally finished at 4.00 as planned. The Umpire for the day was Roger Green and the raffle was very well supported, raising £172. (See PhotoGallery)

Round 1 was a round robin with 4 groups of 5 giving all entrant a minimum of 4 games. The results of this initial stage were as follows.
A B C D
Conroy 7 +32 Haynes 6 +8 Tingay 8 +32 Newsome D 8 +23
Whitehead 7 +14 Jones 4 +3 Pennock 4 +11 Bradley 6 -1
Banthorpe 4 +2 Clark James 4 +1 Clark Janet 4 -6 Hanlon 4 +17
Barthram 2 -15 Fenwick 4 -3 Ridge 4 -13 Jackson A 2 -9
Jackson M 0 -33 Jarvis 2 -9 Flinton 0 -24 Craven 0 -30
The 8 Group winners and runners-up were then matched for the Quarter Finals in which...
Sean Conroy/Bronagh Malone/Jayne Rudd and Joanne Senior beat Bryan & Pat Jones/Derek & Pat Beardley 7-3
Rose Haynes/Simon Holtby/Jacinta Townend/Roger Green beat John Pennock/Sally Roocroft/Keith Hughes/Derek Johnstone 8-4
Len & Pam Bradley/Hilda Thomas/George McDowell beat Keith Tingay/Cyril Ruston/Neville Dawson/Ray Lawson-Howe 7-6
David & Jo Newsome/Ben Render/Richard Lochman just overcame (!) Geoff & Anne Whitehead/Jill Newsome/Lynda Tranmer 15-0
In the Semi Finals, Davids' team (finalists in the last 2 years) ran out of steam and were convincingly overcome 10-1 by Sean & Co whilst Roses' four had little trouble in defeating Len by 13-3.
The Final was bound to be a tight and competitive game featuring as it was, last years Champion Rose (playing once again with Simon & Roger but with Jacinta taking Paul Williamsons No2 slot) and yesterdays newly crowned Pairs Champions Sean and Bronagh (playing with Jayne and Joanne). With 2 ends remaining, Rose was 4-3 up and after Jacinta ditched the jack it looked as if a second consecutive title was on the cards. However, players and spectators alike were thrilled to see Sean play an almost impossible shot to drive one of his outside woods onto his own toucher which settled next to the jack to level the score at 4-4. The final end could have gone to either side but it was Seans side which gained the single shot required to add yet another County title to his portfolio. He has now won all 5 County titles equalling Geoff Whiteheads record and at the moment holds all 5 together (2011 Singles, Triples and Mixed Fours and 2012 Pairs and Fours). Fours of these are held with Bronagh, 2 with Joanne and 2 with Jayne.
All games played were of 7 ends duration and the day finally finished at 5.10 - about an hour later than scheduled. The Umpire for the day was Tom Hillbeck and the raffle was very well supported, raising £154. (See PhotoGallery)

In Round 1, all 16 entrants played 3 games in 4 round-robin groups of 4, played continuously using 8 mats resulting in the following scores.
A B C D
Haynes 5 +28 Render 6 +35 Newsome 6 +25 Banthorpe 6 +11
Bradley 4 -5 Jackson A 4 -3 Raggett 4 +3 Whitehead 4 +10
Jackson M 2 -6 Clark R 2 -22 Ridge 2 -16 Craven 2 -10
Harris 1 -17 Clark J 0 -10 Meek 0 -12 Jarvis 0 -11
Group winners and runners up then contested the Quarter Finals in which; Rose Haynes/Jacinta Townend/Roger Green/Simon Holtby dropped 6 shots on the last end to lose 8-9 to Geoff & Anne Whithead and Avril & John Coates; Gordon & Linda Raggett, Dave Herbert and Pam Walker wanted 4 shots on their last end to force an extra end but only got 3 after a measure so losing out 8-9 to Ben Render, Sean Conroy, Bronagh Malone and Jayne Rudd; Dave, Jo & Jill Newsome and Charlotte Clark won decisively against Arthur Jackson, Jo Hearld and Jim & Jean Weatherill by 17-3 whilst Alan Banthorpe, Caroline Barthram, Jean Rhodes and Barry Simmonite also had a convincing win by 13-4 over Len & Pam Bradley and Geoff & Jackie Clark.
In the Semi Finals, Alans Four went out to Davids Four by 4-11 and Bens Fours overcame Geoffs Four by 7-4.
The Final was thus between last years Champions, Ben & Co and the Newsomes, 2009 Champions, this time playing with Charlotte Clark in lieu of Marlene Jackson. A very tactical game with tight heads and little firing which ended with a win for David, Jo, Jill and Charlotte by 8-6. This was a great bitthday present for Jo who was celebrating reaching the grand old age of 23.
All games played were of 8 ends duration and the day finally finished at 4.50 - a little later than scheduled. The Umpire for the day was Tom Hillbeck and the raffle was well supported, raising £90. (See PhotoGallery)

In Round 1 all 41 entrants were placed in round-robin groups (9 x 4 and 1 x 5) giving everyone a minimum of 3 games of 10 ends. These were played on 10 mats over 6 sessions with no one playing on the same mat twice. The 10 group winners were guaranteed a place in knockouts but only 6 of the remainder qualified to progress. Before deciding who these would be, the organisers reduced to score of the teams in the group of 5 by 25% and then took the next 6 best placed teams based on points score/shot difference. A casualty in this initial round was last years Champion Sean Conroy. In the last 16 previous Champions Rose Haynes (2004) and Gareth Townend (2007,2008) were also eliminated - the former by Bronagh Malone (6-11) and the latter by Roger Green (3-14).
The Quarter Finals saw Geoff Whitehead (2009 Champion) narrowly defeated by Bronagh (9-10) and Roger going down to Ben Render (7-9) after an extra end. Anne Whitehead finally met her match against Simon Holtby (5-12) after a great run which had included defeats of both Sean and Bronagh in Round 1 whilst David Newsome had a comfortable defeat over Dennis Jarvis (17-7)
The Semi Finals produced two great matches both being decided on an extra end with 2006 Champion Simon happy to see off Ben (10-9) and Bronagh squeezing out David by 7-6. David has now been the runner up in 3 of the last 4 years - perhaps 2013 will be his year!
The Final turned out to be a relatively one sided affair with Simon unable to adjust to the mat and finally conceding with two ends remaining and the score at 3-10. Bronagh therefore is the 2012 County Singles Champion, a title she adds to this years Fours and Pairs won just before Christmas. (See PhotoGallery)

(Sunday January 8th 2012)
With 32 entrants, the Round 1 format was a simple one with 8 groups of 4 playing a round robin and all group winners and runners up going on to the last 16 for the first knockout round. This produced no surprise eliminations but the triples of Jo Agustus, Richard Clark, Bryan Jones and Derek Beardsley must have all been disappointed to go out by a single shot.
In the Quarter Finals......
Roger & Diane Ellis and Janet Clark defeated Anne & Mick Ridge and Joanne Senior 9-4;
Geoff & Anne Whitehead and Lynda Tranmer steamed past Janet Crosby, Robert Davies and Ray Sanderson 14-4;
Rose Haynes, Simon Holtby and Roger Green just beat off Matthew Jackson, Alan Ward and Elaine Clark 9-8;
Sean Conroy, Bronagh Malone and Ben Render likewise just squeezed out "the Newsome gang" 9-8.
In the Semi Finals Geoff's trio overcame Rogers by 13-5 whilst Rose's triple struggled to find any consistency against Sean's, finally losing 5-7.
The Final as expected was a tight match but in the end it was last year Champions Sean and Bronagh (with Ben this year in place of Joanne Senior) who triumphed over the 2008 Champions Geoff and Anne (plus Lynda in place of Geoff Dye).
This completes a fantastic 2 years for both Bronagh Malone and Sean Conroy during which they have claimed 6 of the 10 County Championships that have been held. Both have now equalled Geoff Whiteheads achievement of having won all 5 disciplines and this year alone Bronagh's name will be engraved on 4 of the 5 County Cups.

(Saturday January 21st 2012)
The last (but not the least) of this years County Championships saw a record entry of 20 under 18s take part from 5 of our clubs (North Duffield 9, Crossgates 5, Church Fenton 3, Great Ouseburn 2 and Tollerton 1). Although there were 5 England Juniors taking part the majority of the players had much less experience and over half the field was under 14 - extremely encouraging for the future. The youngest bowler was Adam Oswald who weighed in at just 10 years old whilst last years Champion, Matthew Jackson, was taking part part just 3 days before his 18th birthday.
For Round 1, all players were arranged into 4 groups of 5 so were guaranteed 4 games (although due to one absentee due to sickness, one groups had only 3 games). There had as usual been no seeding so some of the younger player had some very tough games against the older ones. But this did not deter them from enjoying the day and gaining some valuable competitive experience (their turn will come). The group winners and runners up from this first round then played in the Quarter Finals (ends increased to 10) which very nearly produced the upset of the day when James Clark found himself trailing 0-6 to 11 year old Daniel Baddeley. However James eventually breathed a sigh of relief when he made it into the Semis by 9-7 but very well played Daniel. In the other games, Jake Potter looked unassailable and cruised into a 13-2 win over Ryan McKee whilst Danny Langdon put out Charlotte Clark by 10-7. Matthew Jackson had a tough game against fellow England squad member Josh Burrow but eventually squeezed him out by12-10.
In the Semi-Finals, James recovered from the shock of his near defeat in the Quarters to beat Matthew by 10-6 whilst Jake, still in good form, beat Danny by 12-5.
The Final produced an excellent match between Jake and James with shot being traded for shot and toucher for toucher. However it is probably fair to say that Jake always had the edge and he eventually claimed the Junior Cup by 12-7.
Target Competition - All players had the opportunity to take part in this subsidiary competition with up to 5 goes at the target (10 for the bull and 1 for the outer edge). This was eventually won by Nicole Baddeley from Great Ouseburn with an accumulated score of 30 whilst Danny Langdon from Church Fenton was runner up with 26.
All Round 1 games were of 8 ends duration and this was increased to 10 for the knockouts. The day to finished slightly ahead of the schedule at 3.15pm. The official Umpire for the day was Rose Haynes (assisted by Roger Green) and the Target Competition was run by Arthur Jackson.
