COUNTY TOURNAMENT - (Saturday March 13th) - For various reasons the "tournament" was not organised this year but a nominal match between the two County teams went ahead in which a very under strength 'A' team just managed to secure victory by 21-19 points.
RALPH PARSONS - Sunday February 7th - Ralph became the 4th player to achieve the distinction of playing in 100 games for the County team. He had his first game for the team in the 1997/98 season and in 1999 took on the Captaincy after the resignation of Fred Wood and thus this year will see him completing his 11th year as the Captain. To commemorate his achievement, Vice Captain Rose Haynes presented him with an inscribed glass trophy.
ARTHUR JACKSON - Sunday November 15th - Arthur Jackson became only the 3rd player to achieve the distinction of playing in 100 games for the County team. Arthur, although the Vice Captain of the 'B' team, was actually playing for the 'A' team on this day due to the absence of one of the regular players. He was first selected into the team in 1997/98 and has been a regular member of the squad ever since. To commemorate his achievement he was presented with an inscribed glass trophy (although the presentation did not take part until January 24th for administrative reasons). (See PhotoGallery)
'B' TEAM ASSESSMENT DAY (Saturday October 3rd) - 30 bowlers assembled at Dalton Village Hall to take part in a series of skills tests to assist the 'B' team Captain/Vice Captain in choosing the best combination of players for the season ahead. Using 3 mats the players all performed a series of 9 tests designed to assess their control of line and weight. With only 2 woods on each test, the tests proved difficult but certainly gave the players food for thought and hopefully made them appreciate the variety of shots they may be asked to play during the course of a match. Additionally, but not as part of the assessment, all participants took part in a 20 question quiz on the Rule Book. This was designed to encourage those who play in the team to study the Rule Book in a little depth so that they are confident of the correct procedures to be followed in various match situations. The day proved useful for both participants and organisers alike and concluded with a raffle and the presentation of an 18th "birthday biscuit" for David Newsome our National U18 Singles Champion.
WARM-UP DAY (27th September) - This year the warm-up day was in the form of a friendly match against the Norfolk "Over 60s group" who we had first played 2 years ago. The day was organised as two separate matches involving both our 'A' an 'B' teams in normal IC format and took place at the Y&D IBC on 8 mats. (The venue was switched after booking arrangements at the teams normal home venue in Easingwold had come up against problems). The day went well for our newly constituted 'A' team even though 5 of the team were absent with England commitments. However the 5 reserves more than filled the gaps and the team had an excellent win by 37-3 (234-114 shots). The 'B' team of course were weakened having lost 5 key players to the 'A' team and in their match it was Norfolk that came out on top by 25-15 (189-164 shots). (See report on Norfolk website)
The Association hopes to organise a return trip to Norfolk next year and in her farewell, Norfolk's Captain, Teresa Goldsmith said we would be guaranteed a warm welcome should we go.
Thanks are due to the Galtres Centre and Easingwold SMBC for allowing us to make use of their mats; to all those that helped on the previous evening and after the match in loading and transporting and laying the mats down; to the Y&D IBC for accommodating us at short notice and for laying on an excellent buffet with a new team of caterers and to the 3 Pats for making the raffle so successful (£160 raised).
