CAMEO SHIELD

This wass a challenge match against a team from the York & District Indoor Bowls Club. Each side fielded 8 triples and all participants had two games on short mats and two games on full size indoor rinks.

In February 2005, the Committee voted to discontinue this competition.

In the inaugural match in April 2002, the Y&D IBC were comfortable winners by 38-26.

In April 2003, NYSMBA hit back and took the shield after a close match in which they won 33-31

In April 2004 the NYSMBA again won, this time more decisively by 38-26.

The fourth contest in April 2005 resulted in another win for the Association, this time by 35-29.

April 2006 - Discontinued

April 2005 - Once again, our 8 triples were made up from players from several clubs - 12 in fact. Disappointingly, the Y & D I.B.C. again suffered from some last minute dropouts, reducing two of their triples to two players who by mutual agreement were allowed to use 3 woods (whilst all other contestants used just two). This did not detract from the match however which was as usual played in a relaxed and very friendly manner. All triples had the usual four (50 minute) games - two on short mats and two on full size rinks. The home club, managed a couple of wins on the short mats whilst the challengers, several of whom did actually play regularly at full size clubs, clocked up three wins and a draw on the longer length. The final scores therefore showed a 35-29 point win to the NYSMBA. Small prizes were also given to Irene & Selwyn Paylor who were the top triple (playing one short) for the home side (4 points and +5 shots) and to Alan Banthorpe, Danny Brown and Derek Williams from the Association (6 points and +18 shots).

April 2004 - Our team of 8 triples this year contained members from 11 of our clubs whilst the Y&DIBC had to play with 2 players missing having been let down at the last minute. Although all games are played with only 2 woods, the organisers agreed that the two teams that were one player short would use 3 woods with no penalties. In spite of that and the failure of the clubs cooling system, a warm but very enjoyable day was had by all. Our side improved substantially over last year winning 4 of their 16 Rinks games and only dropping one of their 16 Short Mat games. This resulted in the Association retaining the Shield by 38-26, a reversal of the score in the inaugural game 3 years ago. Small prizes were also given to Pat Lofthouse, Charlie Arnett and Doug Mitchell who were the top triple for the home side (4 points and +19 shots) and to Geoff & Anne Whitehead and Roger Green who were the only triple to win all their 4 games.

April 2003 - This novel competition was tried out for the first time in 2002 and repeated by request once again. Basically a fun competition, 8 triples from our Association (this year with players from 12 of our clubs) play 8 triples from the membership of the Y & D IBC, with each triple having two games on indoor rinks and two games on short mats. All games are of 50 minutes duration using two woods. Last year the Shield went to the hosts but this year in a much closer finish, the NYSMBA won by 2 points 33-31. Small prizes were also given to the best triple in each team. This year the triples skipped by P. Ellis and P. Lofthouse from the host team both won three of their four games but the former took the prize with a better total number of shots. In our own team it was Geoff & Ann Whitehead with Colin Raper who won, being the only triple to win all four games.
